Iris J. Newkirk, 89

Former Blair and Arlington resident Iris J. Newkirk, 89, of Fremont, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at the A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 16, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Orum with the Rev. Robert Rademacher officiating. Interment was at the Arlington Cemetery.

Iris J. Newkirk was born Nov. 19, 1912, in Blair to Mitchell and Myrtle (Milrons) Rodel. She grew up in Blair, graduating from Blair High School in 1931.

On Aug. 24, 1932, she married Edward A. Newkirk in the Methodist Church in Arlington. They lived on a farm northeast of Arlington, and moved into Fremont in 1982.

Mrs. Newkirk was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Orum, where she had been baptized and confirmed. She was a member of the church’s Ladies Aid. She was also a 50-year member of Sarepta Chapter No. 48 Order of the Eastern Star of Arlington.

She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Eleanor and Bob Wulf of Blair, and Linda and El-Roy Heggemeyer of Fremont; four grandchildren; seven amderspm pf great-grandchildren; a sister, Metta Patton of Lincoln; and a sister-in-law, Mary C. “Johnnie” Anderson of Fremont.

She was preceded in death by her husband and by a grandson.

Ludvigsen Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
