DEATH OF PETER ANDERSON

A sad and fatal accident befell Peter Anderson, a young man aged about 23 years, while out hunting with his brother on York Creek, about 10 miles northwest of Blair, on Sunday last. He had climbed through a wire fence and was pulling his shot gun which was cocked, through after him, when the hammer caught and discharged both barrels into his side just above the hip and passing through upward to the opposite shoulder. He called to his brother “come quick,” and fell to the ground a corpse. His brother hastened for assistance and carried him to the residence of Mrs. Peterson, his aunt, on whose farm it occurred.

The young man’s father, four brothers and a sister live in this county, while there is another sister in the west. He was a nephew of Mrs. Watson Tyson, and has other relatives and a host of friends in this county where he was raised from boyhood. The manner and suddenness of his death is sadly mourned by the large circle of friends and acquaintances of the family, and their grief at the cemetery while consigning his remains to the tomb indicate plainly the esteem and affection in which he was held, one of the chief mourners being a Miss Johnson, a very estimable young lady, soon to have been led to the altar by the deceased. He was buried in the Blair cemetery on Tuesday, the Rev. Sheppard of the Baptist church conducting the services at the grave, and speaking a few works of condolence to those grouped around the casket. He was buried by the side of his mother who was laid to rest some five or six years ago.

FATAL ACCIDENT

On Sunday last Mr. Peter Anderson, aged 22 years, son of Anders Anderson of Grant Township, was shot and instantly killed by the accidental discharge of his own gun. He was out hunting with some companions, when on crawling through a wire fence and pulling the gun after him with the muzzle pointing forward, the hammer is supposed to have caught on a wire and slipped off causing the explosion. He was evidently in a stooping posture with the muzzle of the gun pointing directly at him, as the charge entered down near the belt and came out well up to the shoulders.

Peter was born in Norway Feb. 2, 1869 and came to America with his parents in 1875. He was one of a family of ten children - five boys and five girls. Anders Anderson has long been known as “Shoemaker” Anderson, and has lived on the old place since Sept., 1875. The funeral of deceased was held on Tuesday, remains being interred in the Blair cemetery, where his mother was buried some time since, and services were held at the cemetery only, being conducted by Rev. Sheppard of the Baptist church.
