Death’s Toll

Two times during the past week has the finger of the grim reaper touched Blair in his harvest of death, three times have one of our friends pushed through the curtain that hides the future, two homes are sorrowing for loved ones gone.

Probably the best known was Mrs. William F. Smith who died at her home north of Blair Friday morning, May 16 after an illness of four months. Hattie J. Hungate, daughter of Thomas C. and Anna Hungate, was born December 9th, 1866, near Cuming City, Neb. In early life she became a Christian and joined the Baptist church at Herman. Later in life she united with the Baptist church at Blair. March 7th, 1900, she was married to William F. Smith of Blair. To them one child, Geo. Hungate, was born, who died when nine months old. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband William F. Smith, three sisters, Mrs. Cross, of Herman, Mrs. Tucker, of Pender and Mrs. Nevins, of Grand Junction, Col., , and two brothers, Howard Hungate, of Columbia, Mo., and T.W. Hungate of Ryder, North Dakota and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon, May 18th, conducted by the pastor, F.M. Sturdevant, and the remains were laid to rest in the Blair cemetery.

To those who were not apprised of her long illness, beginning before the first of the year, the announcement of the death of Mrs. “Will” Smith, which occurred on the morning of the 16th inst., was a great surprise. She was a daughter of the late T.C. The funeral was held at the farm home, on the old Joe Johnson place, on Sunday afternoon and burial in the Blair cemetery where her father and mother and many other relatives rest.
