Snowdon George Allen 7/2/1915

Obituary printed in the July 7, 1915 Pilot, Blair, Nebraska

George A. Snowdon died at the Nicholas Senn hospital in Omaha at 9:08 last Friday morning, from injuries received in an accident that occurred the previous Monday up near Leigh, Neb. Mrs. Snowdon, Wallace and Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Lallman were with him when the end came. Kirk and Marie went down on the morning train but arrived a few minutes after the death angel had paid his sad visit. The body was brought up on the afternoon train Saturday and the funeral held at the house on east South street at 2 o’clock Sunday, Rev. J.M. Kokjer officiating. Mr. Snowdon was helping build a set of new buildings for Russell White on a farm nine miles from Leigh, Neb. While working in the field during the day, Mr. White located a swarm of bees and Mr. Snowden went out with him after supper to hive them. They had done so and were returning in a wagon with the double box on and only a board for a seat. Mr. White got out to open a gate and George was driving through when the wagon wheel on his side dropped into a deep rut and threw him out onto the back of his neck. The team started to run away but Mr. White soon caught them and returning asked Mr. Snowdon if he was hurt. He said he was and that for some reason he couldn’t get up. Mr. White wen to him and as he turned him over two of the vertebral bones at the base of the neck snapped back into place. Mr. Snowden had turned deathly pale and death would no doubt have resulted shortly had Mr. White not turned him over when he did. His color came back and he seemed to feel better but was paralyzed practically all over. A doctor was called from Leigh and he advised that Mr. Snowdon be taken to Omaha, as did also a physician in Schuyler when he was taken there the next morning. He arrived in Omaha Tuesday afternoon and an X-ray photograph was taken at the Nicholas Senn hospital as soon as possible. This revealed trouble and an operation was advised. There were chips from the vertebra found, also a clot of blood on the spinal cord though the cord itself didn’t seem to be greatly injured. There was but one hope, that relieving the pressure would restore the nerves to sensitiveness, for the bowels and digestive organs were paralyzed and he couldn’t live long in that condition. He seemed to improve Wednesday and joked with the family and nurses, as was his custom. Thursday he was worse, having a bad sinking spell in the morning, but rallied. Friday morning he became so weak from lack of nourishment that the end came peacefully. He was conscious most of the time up to the very last and knew all the family. George Allen Snowdon was born at Medford, Me. July 25th, 1854, and was therefore almost 61 years of age. He went to Minnesota as a young man, coming to this city in 1886, which has been his home ever since. He was a carpenter by trade and was an exceptionally good workman. He was married to Miss Carolina Beckman, of Telbasta, in 1889, and to this union five children were born, one son, Kirby, dying when but three years of age. He is survived by his wife, two sons, George Wallace, Mrs. H.H. Lallman of Winslow, and N. Marie, the youngest of the family. There was a large attendance at the funeral and the many beautiful flowers attested somewhat the esteem in which the deceased and his family are held in the community. The pallbearers were Chas. Beckmann, L.A. Farnberg, John Schmahling, E.M. Tetsell, H. Utermann and J.L. Edwards. The grief-stricken family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sudden loss of husband, father, and provider.

His death was brought about as the result of an accident occurring on June 29, when he fell from a loaded wagon, striking on the back of his head and injuring his spine which brought on a stroke of paralysis.

After a careful examination an operation was performed, hoping to relieve the pressure on the nerves, which was thought to cause the trouble, but to no avail.

On July 25, 1899, he was married to Caroline M. Beckman. To this union five children were born, four of whom with their mother mourn his loss.

Mr. Snowdon was a good citizen and a man well versed in the subjects of the day, and one of the finest penmen it has been our lot to meet. He was a good husband and father and leaves a family that are respected by all who know them. The funeral services were held at the home in Blair at two o’clock p.m. on Sunday, July 4, and were conducted by the Rev.
