Aged Resident Dies

One of Washington county’s pioneer residents was called to rest on Tuesday morning when Mrs. Eliza Barton died at her home on south First street after she had been confined to her bed but a few days with double pneumonia. The deceased was born in England, February 3, 1847 and came to American with her parents when she was four years of age. The family settled in Illinois where the children were educated in the public schools.

On January 18, 1865, the deceased was united in marriage to Solomon Barton at Edgewood, Illinois, and to this union ten children were born, nine of whom are surviving. In October, 1877, the family moved to Nebraska and located on a farm west of this city where they lived for many years. The trip to Washington county was made in a covered wagon and the Barton family belonged to the early pioneers and endured the hardships so common to the early settlers. Mr. Barton died thirteen years ago and the following year the deceased moved to her home in this city where she had since resided. She was of a sunny disposition and had a wide acquaintance in this county, all of whom thought highly of her.

She leaves to mourn her loss, four sons, Solomon of Arlington, William and Lester, who live near Blair, and Elmer at home; five daughters, Mrs. Pixley of Brown county, Nebraska, Mrs. Newkirk of Arlington, Mrs. McCowan and Mrs. Nels Nelson of north of Blair, and Miss Anna Barton at home. She is also survived by two brothers, William Wilson and Robert Wilson, both of this city and a sister, Mrs. Vesta of Layclede, Illinois, besides two half brothers and a half sister.

Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, the Rev. Carl G. Bader officiating, after which interment will be made in the family lot in Blair cemetery.
