James Bauman, 72

James Bauman, 72, of Neligh, who has relatives in the area, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Beyer Funeral Home. There will be no visitation.

Burial will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Neligh. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

James Bauman was born April 5, 1926, to Frank and Alice (Rainbow) Bauman in Neligh.

He attended school at Neligh where he graduated in 1943.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 24, 1943, and served overseas in campaigns at Bougainville in the Solomon Islands, Guam and Iwo Jima. He returned to the United States in 1946 and re-enlisted. He was sent to Korea in 1950 and landed with the forces at Inchon. He was also in the battle of Yndamni and Chosin Reservoir. He returned to the states after a little over a year.

He was also a part of the American Expeditionary Force in Lebanon in 1959. He served at various posts and stations throughout the United States and much of the world. He retired from the Marines in 1964 as a master sergeant.

He returned to Neligh and served for a brief time as a deputy sheriff and also worked as a bartender.

He married Mildred (McAdams) Peetz on May 9, 1972, at Yankton, S.D. They lived in Neligh.

He served four years as president of the Antelope Country Club, during which time an irrigation system was installed and a new clubhouse was built.

He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5287 in Neligh and a lifetime member of the National Association for Uniformed Services.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; stepsons, Dr. Dwaine Peetz of Omaha, Forrest Peetz of O’Neill, Thomas Peetz of Concord, N.H., and Michael Peetz of St. Louis, Mo.; stepdaughters, Susan Ames of Neligh, Candace Pelster of Lincoln, Kristina Zimmer of Hays, Kan., Stephanie Peetz of Omaha and Kathryn Thiele of St. Paul; 28 step-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Donnelly of Hooper and a sister-in-law, Fern of Blair.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
