Gaylord V. Beadle, Calhoun Businessman, Is Dead

One-time Mayor and civic leader ran BST Garage

Gaylord V. Beadle, one time prominent business man and civic leader in Ft. Calhoun, died Wednesday, December 3rd at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair. He had been in failing health for a number of years.

Mr. Beadle was born at Forest City, Iowa October 7, 1893 and was 76 years of age at the time of his death. As a youth he grew up in Council Bluffs and when a young man was engaged as a bank clerk in that city.

During World War I he served in the army, and became a member of the first Hospital Unit to serve on the front lines in France. He was attached to Mobile Hospital Unit No. I, Unit K and his outfit saw action in many front line battles.

Following the war he became interested in getting into business and he formed a business association with two acquaintances and purchased the garage in Ft. Calhoun which he ran for a number of years. The business was named the “B.S.T. Garage” after the names of its original owners, Beadle, Snuffin and Tyler. Snuffin and Tyler stayed in the business but a short time and sold out to Mr. Beadle who continued the name of the business.

In time the names of the original owners were forgotten and the idea became prevalent that B.S.T. stood for “Best Service in Town,” a conclusion which Mr. Beadle never contested and the public readily accepted. The garage did service work, sold new cars and a line or farm machinery. It also headquartered an extensive oil business.

On February 28, 1922 he was married to Hazel B. Knott, of Council Bluffs and to this union a daughter, Patricia, was born. She is now Mrs. Bob M. Jordan, of Northbrook, I1L Mrs. Jordan survives her father as do two grandchildren. Mrs. Beadle preceded her husband in death, having died in January, 1967.

Due to ill health, the garage and business was sold in 1947.

Mr. and Mrs. Beadle lived for a year and a half at the Masonic Manor in Omaha. They then moved to the Good Shepherd Home in Blair which was their final place of residence.

During his years in business, Mr. Beadle filled the offices of City Councilman, Mayor and Fire Chief. He became interested in Masonry and became Master of Solomon Lodge No. 10 at Ft. Calhoun. He had received the Fifty Year Badge recognizing his service in Masonry and he had been awarded the coveted Jordan Medal. He also became a member of the Shrine.

He was a long-time member of the Ft. Calhoun Presbyterian Church and funeral services were held at that church Saturday morning, December 6th. The Rev. Keith Sackett conducted the service.

Burial, under the direction of the Sievers Mortuary, was made in the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Council Bluffs.
