Donald E. Nielsen, 76

Washington County native Donald E. Nielsen, 76, of West Point, died Monday, May 11, 2009, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 15, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Point. Interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will continue on Friday from 9 a.m. till service time at the church.

Donald Edward Nielsen was born Nov. 27, 1932, on a farm south of Blair to Axel E. and Martha (Nelson) Nielsen. He attended rural school in Washington County and graduated from Blair High School.

He went to work for a Standard Oil Station in Omaha and in 1954, moved to West Point, and purchased his first tank wagon. He went on to operate Nielsen Oil and Propane in West Point until 1988, when he sold it to Sapp Bros. He continued to operate his farms and feed cattle.

Mr. Nielsen was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Point, and had served on its finance board. He served on the Variance Committee for the City of West Point for a number of years and belonged to the former West Point Lions Club and West Point Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed going to coffee with the guys and was especially proud of the completion of the Nielsen Community Center in West Point.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Nielsen of West Point; two sons and daughters-in-law; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one stepson and spouse; two step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; many special friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, a brother, and a son.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran School, both of West Point, or charity of the donor’s choice.

FUNERAL SERVICES Friday, May 15, 2009 at 10:30am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Point, NE with interment in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

VISITATION Thursday 9am-8pm at the Kuzelka-Minnick Funeral Home in West Point and will continue on Friday from 9am until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be sent in Don’s name to a charity of your choice, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or St. Paul’s Lutheran School, both in West Point, NE
