Rachel N. (Nelson) Hansen Sorensen, 91

Rachel N. (Nelson) Hansen Sorensen, 91, of Blair, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, at First Lutheran Church in Blair. Burial will follow services in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday with family receiving friends from 6 to to 8 p.m. at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair.

Rachel N. (Nelson) Hansen Sorensen was born on the family farm 7 miles north of Fremont on a very cold morning Dec. 12, 1922. She was baptized January 1923 and confirmed May 1937 at Bluffs Trinity Lutheran in Fremont. Rachel attended Larson Grade School and graduated from Hooper High School in 1940.

Rachel married Martin P. Hansen on April 29, 1942, at Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church.

During Rachel's lifetime, she was a nanny and church secretary. She enjoyed outdoor activities, sewing and homemaking. She taught Sunday school for 12 years and was active in church women, Love Days and volunteer work at the Good Shepherd Home and the Blair Hospital Auxiliary. She lived most of her adult life in the Pleasant View School District where she was also a longtime member of the Bench Club.

Rachel moved to Good Shepherd Assisted Living in April of 2006 and then moved to Good Shepherd Home in September of 2014.

Martin died Dec. 9, 1986. Rachel moved into Blair in February 1987.

She married Carl Sorensen on June 3, 1989, at First Lutheran Church in Blair. They enjoyed 12 years together traveling, visiting relatives and playing cards before Carl died in April of 2001.

Rachel was the mother of four children: daughters Marcia Golden of Blair and Joan Schroeder and husband Doyle of Talmage, and sons Rodney and wife Patricia of Blair and Douglas and wife Shari of Omaha; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

When Rachel and Carl were married, her family grew to include three step-children: son Steve Sorensen and wife Bruce of Blair and daughters Kris Schneider and husband Ron of Wichita, Kan., and Joi Sorensen and friend Earney Newton of Omaha; four step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Rachel's favorite Bible verse Romans 8:28 was her baptism, confirmation, and wedding verse.

Rachel was preceded in death by husbands Martin and Carl; and a sister, Evelyn Mason. She was the last of the sisters and brothers of her husband Martin's family and her own.

Memorials are suggested to Good Shepherd Lutheran Home or First Lutheran Church in Blair.
