Phyllis Jean Quick, 80

Phyllis Jean Quick, 80, of Blair, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home on Tuesday Nov. 25. The family will greet visitors an hour before the service.

Phyllis was born Jan. 21, 1934, in Blair, to Hugh and Mary (Hovendick) Sutherland. She graduated from Blair High School in 1951.

She married Kenneth Nickle in 1951, but was sadly widowed in 1954.

She was married to James Quick from Tekamah in 1956. They were blessed with 53 years of marriage. They moved to Millard where Phyllis maintained a beautiful home, enjoyed gardening and raised her family. During those years, Phyllis was active in a Home Extension club, the Millard Volunteer Fire Auxillary and the Legion Auxiliary.

When Jim retired from the phone company, they moved to southern Missouri where they enjoyed the beautiful lakes and their 40 acres of timber and grassland. Phyllis especially enjoyed observing the beauty of nature, the changing seasons and the many forms of wildlife that lived on their protected land.

After Jim’s death, Phyllis returned to Blair to be near family and friends.

She will be remembered for her many interests and passions, which she loved to read about. Over the years, Phyllis’ eye for detail was evident in her talents of quilting, knitting, sewing, crafting, painting and cooking. She loved to be outside where she could nurture her plants, build her gardens and pull weeds.

However, it was family that was most important to Phyllis. It stems from the close-knit family and extended family she grew up with. She enjoyed sharing stories of trips to the farm, working with her mom around the house, working outside with her dad, large family get-togethers and living with six people in a small house. It did not matter how you entered the family – whether by birth, marriage, adoption or invitation – all that mattered was that you were family and you were loved.

Phyllis is survived by her children: Tanya (Charles) Ericson and Rodney (Tracy) Quick; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; five sisters: Vivienne Hatton-Kingman of Arizona, Verna (Melvin) Kuhr of Blair, Marilyn Bassett of Fremont, Sidney Penke of Blair and Alice Ricker of Blair.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands: Kenneth E. Nickle (1930-1954) and James R. Quick (1956-2009).
