Myrna J. Matzen, 80

Myrna J. Matzen, 80, of Blair, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the First Lutheran Church in Blair. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time at the church.

Myrna was born July 26, 1934, in Omaha to Chris and Olga (Anderson) Frahm.

After graduating from Benson High School in 1952, Myrna attended summer school at the University of Omaha where she received her teacher’s certificate. That next fall, she taught rural school in Washington and Douglas counties.

She married Philip Matzen in 1954 and started working part time as a nurse’s aide at the Blair Hospital. She enjoyed the work so much she went to school and received her LPN license and worked for several years at the Good Shepherd Home in Blair. Myrna decided to return to school to earn her RN license in 1982 and worked at the Blair Hospital until 2001.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Philip Matzen of Blair; son and daughter-in-law: Steve and Jan Matzen of Lincoln; son Mark Matzen of Blair; grandsons: Timothy, Michael and Joel, all of Lincoln; sisters and brother-in-law: Norma Schneemeyer of Fort Calhoun, Alice Penke of Omaha and Betty and Lloyd Felter of Jefferson, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers-in-law: Harold Schneemeyer and Henry Penke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Blair rescue squad or donor’s choice.

Wyuka Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.
