Howard D.M. Shanahan, 86

Howard D.M. Shanahan, 86, of Naples, Fla., died Sept. 19, 2010, at Naples Community Hospital after complications from a fall. Services were Sept. 25 at St. William Catholic Church in Naples.

Howard Daniel Michael Shanahan was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Cedar Bluff to Daniel and Minnie Shanahan. He attended the North Bend schools and Creighton University.

He served in the Merchant Marines, spending World War II in the Pacific Theater. At the conclusion of the war, he returned to North Bend and married his childhood sweetheart, Mignon Cantlin, a local teacher.

In 1946, he purchased a tavern and liquor store in Blair, which he operated until 1962, when he purchased a wholesale beer franchise in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1972, he formed a corporation that started a commercial real estate development and a vending operation in northeast Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Shanahan then jointly ran the first video, computer and pinball arcades in Waterloo. In 1985, he sold the companies and retired to Naples. He enjoyed boating with his family his whole life, and was a member of the Naples Cruise Club. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was involved in his communities in Waterloo and Naples, and was a member of Rotary, Moose and Elks Clubs, on development committees, and raised money for the Catholic church and schools, and the American Cancer Society.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mignon; seven children, Kathleen Graeven of Orinda, Calif., Margaret Shanahan and John Shanahan, both of Chicago, Ill., Kerry Jane Shanahan of Westminster, Colo., Mary Ellen Shanahan of Eureka, Calif., Patricia Jean Shanahan of Waterloo, Iowa, and Ann Marie Shanahan of Arvada, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five grandchildren; and beloved sons-in-law.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Shanahan Anderson.

Even in death, Mr. Shanahan gave to others by being an organ donor.
