Siert, Henry 9/26/1899

Printed in the Sept. 28, 1899 Courier, Blair, Nebraska

Henry Siert died of liver complaint at St. Joseph’s hospital in Omaha Tuesday morning. Most of his family was at his bedside when the end came. He was conscious and recognized those around him. He did not think he was going to die, and wanted the children to go home, saying he would soon be well. The end came suddenly, after a peaceful night. He arose to a sitting posture and with a sudden cry of “Mother”, he clasped her in his arms and sank into the last, long sleep of death. The body was brought up on the 2:00 o’clock train and taken to the house. The funeral will be held this afternoon at Germania hall and will be conducted by the Verein, of which he was a member. He was born in the province of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, in 1842, and came to this country with his uncle, George Siert, at Davenport, Ia. Two years later he came to Omaha where he was married and soon afterward moved to Blair. His son Henry was the first child born in this city. He leaves a wife and ten children, seven boys and three girls. Henry is married and lives in Milwaukee, Wis., and George, the only other one married, is the efficient druggist at W.D. Haller’s drugstore. The remainder of the family live in town and on the farm four miles west of here. Most of the time Mr. Siert was engaged as a liquor dealer in this city, though some years he spent on the farm. He was ailing two months ago and about a month ago he went up to Hot Springs, S.D., for his health. On Sunday, Sept. 17th, he was taken to the hospital where he died nine days later. One brother, Peter, is the only relative in this county.
