Leona Nieman, 100

Arlington native Leona Nieman, 100, of Wayne, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at the Wakefield Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Kanoy officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul Cemetery.

Leona Giesselman was born Sept. 7, 1906, on a farm near Arlington to Gottlieb and Hannah (Jacob) Giesselman. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Arlington.

On March 15, 1931, she married Walter Nieman at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The couple farmed for 23 years before moving to Fremont in 1954.

In 1963, the Niemans moved to Blair, where they owned and operated Triggs-Nieman-Thew Carpet and Drapery store. They retired in Blair and, in 1994, they moved to Wayne to be near their daughter and her family.

Mrs. Nieman lived at The Oaks in Wayne for six years before moving to the Wakefield Health Care Center. She celebrated her 100th birthday at the care center with friends and her family.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and attended Grace Lutheran Church while living in Wayne.

She is survived by a son-in-law, Steve (Ruth) Schumacher of Branson, Mo.; a grandson and his family; a granddaughter, and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1995; daughter, Donna Schumacher; son-in-law, Carroll Triggs; three brothers and five sisters.
