Vernon L. Hilgenkamp, 95, of Fremont died Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at Shalimar Gardens.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Dugan Funeral Chapel in Fremont. Pastor A. David Paul will be officiating.Burial will take place in Memorial Cemetery.

Vernon was born Oct. 13, 1919, to G.W. and Dorthea (Schmidt) Hilgenkamp.

Vernon attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and Arlington Public School before he began his farming career.

He married Agnes Wittman in 1941(she died in 1964). He began farming in 1942 near North Bend, Arlington and Ames.

In 1963, he bought the International Harvester dealership in Scribner. Vernon ran the dealership until retiring in 1984 then moved to Fremont in 2001.

He married Letha Barber in 1965.

Vernon had a passion for woodworking, especially making dollhouses. He was very active with Habitat for Humanity and helped build 20-plus houses. Vernon loved traveling with Letha and working in the garden. He was an active member of First Congregational-U.C.C. in Fremont and Scribner, and was a former member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner.

He is survived by his sons: Gerald (Donna) Hilgenkamp of Ames, Stan (Marsha Lindbloom) Hilgenkamp of Lincoln, Paul (Chris) Hilgenkamp of Castle Rock, Colo., and Don (Kris) Hilgenkamp of Lincoln; stepson Andy (Lois) Barber of Spring Hill, Kan.; stepdaughter Laurie (Steve) Holben of Gardner, Kan.; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Agnes; second wife Letha; sons: John and Alan; stepdaughter Pauline-Polly Streenz; brothers: Gilbert and Floyd; and granddaughter Elizabeth Holben.

Memorials are suggested to Habitat for Humanity.
