Crash Injuries Fatal to Mrs. Emil Follen

Blair Woman Dies

Death Comes Week After Group in Crash as Enroute to Wedding

Blairite Had Been Cuming City Teacher

Mrs. Emil Follen, 40, of Blair, teacher at Cuming City rural school north of here, died last Thursday afternoon from injuries sustained a week earlier in a car-truck crash at Woodbine, Ia. Her death occurred at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, where she and her parents and sister had been confined since the crash.

Mrs. Follen had suffered internal injuries and multiple pelvic fracture.

The body was returned to Blair and funeral services, in charge of the Bendorf Funeral Home, were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist church. A large throng of relatives and friends was present. The Rev. D. D. Kennedy, pastor, and the Rev. Re. E. Morton, president of Dana College, officiated. Interment followed in Blair Cemetery.

The crash which was to claim the Blairite’s life occurred Mar. 20 as Mrs. Follen, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Frain of Blair, her sister, Mrs. Raymond Kuhr of Kennard, and her son, Lyle Follen of Blair, were enroute to Chicago to attend the wedding of the Frains’ son, Carl. The Frain car went out of control on icy pavement and was struck head on by a bakery truck.

Here Since 1925 Mrs. Follen, as Gladys Frain, was born Dec. 8, 1906, at Macedonia, Ia. When she was a high school student, in 1925, the Frains moved to Blair, their home since. After her graduation from Blair high school, she attended Wayne State Teachers’ College and became a school teacher.

She and Emil Follen were married July 3, 1929, and to them were born two sons, Lyle, now 17, and Allen, 12. During the war, when there was a shortage of teachers, Mrs. Follen resumed her teaching profession. She was teaching at Cuming City at the time of her death.

Mrs. Follen was baptized in 1914 as a member of the Baptist church. She was a member of the Rebekah lodge.

Surviving Mrs. Follen are her husband, Emil; two sons, Lyle and Allen; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Frain. All are Blairites.

Other survivors include three sisters, Ms. Edith Lee of Woodstock, Ill., Mrs. Stanley Marsh (Alta) of Herman, and Mrs. Raymond Kuhr (Alma) of Kennard; and three brothers, George Frain of Pender, Garold Frain of Ogden, U., and Carl Frain of Chicago.

Mrs. Gladys “Frain” Follen Automobile Crash Fatality

Mrs. Gladys “Frain” Follen, who with other members of her family met with an automobile accident while on their way to attend her brother’s wedding in Chicago, died as the result.

Gladys Frain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Frain was born at Macedonia, Iowa on December 8, 1906, and passed away at the Mercy Hospital on Thursday afternoon, March 27, at the age of 40 years and 4 months. It was during her first year in High School that the family moved to Blair where she graduated in 1925. She received her teachers training at Wayne Normal.

On July 3, 1929 she was united in marriage to Emil Follen, and to this happy union two children were born, Lyle, 17, and Allen, 12. She loved her home and family, and expressed that love in the things she did to make the home attractive. During the war when there was a shortage of teachers she gave of her time to teaching. She was teaching in the Cuming City School at the time of her death. In 1914 she was baptized and became a member of the church taking an active part. She was an active member of the Rebecca Lodge.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband and two sons, Lyle and Allen. Her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Frain, three sisters and three brothers, Edith Lee, Woodstock, Ill.; Alta Marsh, Herman; Elma Kuhr, Kennard; George Frain, Pender; Gerald Frain, Ogden, Utah; and Carl Frain, Chicago, Ill. Also a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services at the Baptist church Sunday, March 30, 2:30 p.m., D. D. Kennedy and Rev. Morton, President of Dana College, officiating. Interment at Blair Cemetery. C. K. Bendorf had charge of the funeral.
