The World-Herald might not be the independent, employee-owned publication it is today without the behind-the scenes work of attorney Tyler B. Gaines.

Gaines who represented a number of local corporations and foundations, died Monday, surrounded by family at his Fort Calhoun home. He was 82.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Episcopal Church, 93rd and Blondo Streets.

Gaines was born and reared in Omaha, where he graduated from Central High School. He attended Yale University and served as a pilot in the Navy at the conclusion of World War II.

He received his law degree from the University of Nebraska and joined the Omaha law firm of Gaines, Shoemaker and Crawford in 1949. His father and grandfather also lawyers, had worked with the firm.

Gaines worked for such charities as the Lied Foundation and the Hitchcock Foundation and served on the boards of Brownell-Talbot School and Forest Lawn Cemetery.

In 1961, Gaines played a key role in preventing the sale of The World-Herald to the Samuel Newhouse newspaper group in New York City.

Working as the attorney for a representative of two heirs of newspaper founder Gilbert M. Hitchcock, Gaines helped to delay the sale of the newspaper.

Peter Kiewit then offered a higher price through his Omaha-based Peter Kiewit Sons’ construction company. The Kiewit purchase paved the way for newspaper employees to gain majority ownership of the paper.

Gaines loved to read about history and politics, according to his wife, Agneta Gaines.

“His house is wall-to-wall books,” she said.

And all that reading contributed to interesting conversations, said his son, David Gaines of Omaha.

“He had a great sense of humor,” his son said. “He knew how to tease people. He made a lot of puns.”

Survivors also include: daughters Kassey Gaines, Buffalo, N.Y.; Betsy Larson, Seattle; Sally McKee, Lincoln; Mary Gaines, Mountain View, Calif.; stepdaughter, Anna Anderhagen, Minneapolis; stepson, Anders Donaldson, Olathe Kan.; sister, Mary T. Gaines, Durango, Colo.; brother, Frank Gaines, Estes Park, Colo.; and 10 grandchildren.
