AGED DANISH LADY PASSES AWAY SUNDAY

Mrs. Marcus Beck passed away last Sunday, at her home in this city at the advanced age of 81 years.

Mary Anderson was born at Gjorting, Denmark, May 30, 1841, and grew to young womanhood in that country. At the age of 21 years she became engaged to Jens Beck, who came to America to secure a home before sending for the young lady.

But while at work in Omaha he was injured by a railway train to such an extent that he died eight days afterwards, consequently the wedding never culminated, but a few years later his brother, Marcus Beck, who was also in America, returned to Denmark for her and arranged for a wedding with the young lady, she to come to America when he had a home ready.

In March, 1874, she came to the new land, arriving in Omaha, and later came to the place we now call Orum, where she worked for a family until November of the same year, when Marcus Beck became the husband of his deceased brother’s fiancé. The marriage took place on November 3, 1874.

They set up housekeeping in a new house built and crudely furnished by themselves, and to them three children were born: Anders, who died in 1902; Maura Marie, the only daughter, who died at the age of six and a half years. The only surviving child, Andrew, lives on a farm near Blair.

After living on the farm for thirteen years, Mr. and Mrs. Beck moved to Blair, where her husband passed away in 1911.

Since the death of the son, Anders, the subject of this sketch has made her home with his widow, Mrs. Anna Beck, in this city.

Mrs. Beck was taken ill on Wednesday of last week with trouble incident to old age, and survived but a few days.

Mrs. Beck passed away at 12:30 Sunday noon at her home out near Dana College, at the ripe old age of 81 years. She had been falling for some time but went to bed only last Tuesday evening, death resulting five days later.

The funeral was held at the Danish Lutheran church at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, Rev. H. Nelson, her pastor, officiating, assisted by Dr. P. S. Vig. Interment was in the Blair cemetery by the side of her husband, whose death occurred in March.

Marie Anderson was born in Denmark May 1st, 1841, and came to this country in March, 1874. In November of that same year she was married to Marcus Beck by Judge Jesse T. Davis and made their home near Orum for 13 years.

They moved to the place where death found them both in 1888. Her only daughter, Louisa Marie, died at the age of 6 1/2 years and her oldest son, Anders N. Beck, died in 1902, leaving but one child-living, Andrew Beck. There are nine grandchildren, one being Marcus Beck.

#3-17 Aug., 1922 - The Enterprise - Mary Marie Beck

Mary Marie Anderson was born in Garding, Denmark May 1, 1841. She was the youngest of seven children, and lived the longest. At the age of twenty one she went to Schleswig to work, there she met and became engaged to Jens Beck, an older brother of Marcus Beck. Jens came to America to prepare a home for his future bride. While working on the railroad near Omaha with his brother, Marcus, he was run over by a train, and both legs cut off and died from the effects of his injuries five or six days later.

Marcus Beck, his brother, returned to the old country to carry the sad news to Miss Anderson. He became engaged to her, and came back to America to prepare a home, and she was to come later.

She left Schleswig in company with Andrew, a younger brother of Marcus, and came to Omaha in March, 1874. Here she spent six months working as a domestic that she might learn the American customs and language. She was married to Mr. Beck on Nov. 3, 1874, but as their home was not ready at that time, did not move into their own home near Orum until the next year. Here they lived until 1888, and here their three children, Anders, Andrew and Laura Marie were born.

Two children and her husband preceded her in death. Anders, the oldest son, died in 1902; the daughter, Laura Marie, died about six years ago, and her husband, Marcus Beck died in 1911.

She leaves to mourn her an only son, Andrew Beck, and two daughters-in-law and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Beck took sick on Tuesday night, Aug. 8, and passed away at 12:30 Sunday morning, Aug. 13.

The funeral was held from the Danish church on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 15, at 2 o’clock. Rev. Vig speaking in the Danish language and Rev. H. Nielsen in the English language. The body was laid to rest beside that of her husband in the Blair cemetery.
