Amanda W. Kay, 85

Services for Amanda Wilhelmina Kay, 85, of Blair and formerly of Fort Calhoun, who died February 2, 1994 at her Blair home were Saturday, February 5, at the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church in Fort Calhoun. Rev, Gale Prentice and Rev. Doug Darnold officiated. Burial was in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

Amanda Wilhelmina Kay was born May 21, 1908 to August and Anna Lorsch Klassen. She graduated from Fort Calhoun High School.

She was a former owner-operator of the Kay Apple Orchard in Fort Calhoun.

She was a member of the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church, the Quilters group at the church and United Presbyterian Women. She was also very active in the Senior Citizen Center in Blair.

She married William Kay. He preceded her in death in 1976.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Nona Kay of Arlington and three grand-children, Cindy Mock of Albion; Alan of Houston and Lori Holstein of Omaha.

Pallbearers were Don Andersen, Clifford Larsen, Harold Kay, Rev. Dave Castrodale, Wendell Walker and John Suverkrubbe.

Honorary pallbearers were Otis Hawkins, Harry Lund, Richard Sievers, Billy Stratbucker, Jim Kruger and Bruce Sill.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for the services.

Amanda Kay, 85; Former Orchard Owner

Fort Calhoun, Neb. – The funeral for Amanda W. Kay, who ran the thousand-tree Kay Apple Orchard in Fort Calhoun with her late husband, William Kay, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Kay, 85, died Wednesday at her Blair residence after a lingering illnesses.

Duane Sprick, a Fort Calhoun resident, said many people in Fort Calhoun fondly remember picking raspberries and currants as children in the Kay orchard, which operated from 1942 to 1975.

“She put a lot of kids to work,” he said. “I picked a lot of raspberries for her – and ate a lot, too.”

Mrs. Kay was a native of Fort Calhoun and spent most of her life here.

Survivors include a son, Gene of Arlington, Neb. and three grandchildren.
