Funeral Services Monday For Longtime Calhoun Resident

Funeral services were to be held at the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church on Monday, Jan. 3rd, for William Kay, who passed away at the Blair Hospital on December 30th. Rev. Lynn Williams officiated at the funeral, with Sievers Funeral Home in charge of the funeral and interment at the Fort Calhoun Cemetery. Mr. Kay had suffered a heart attack on Christmas Eve.

William Kay was born at Fort Calhoun on September 19, 1896, and was a lifetime resident of Fort Calhoun. In 1932 he married Amanda Klassen, also, of Fort Calhoun. In 1914 they had started farming on the ground known as Kay’s Orchard and in 1942 started the big orchard, and then retired in 1975, after being in the fruit business for 60 years.

He had been a member of the Fort Calhoun Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years; a member of the school board for 15 years; had served on the city Planning Board for a number of years; a member of Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church, of which he was also an elder; a committeeman for the Boy Scouts; and last October he received his 50-year pin in the Solomon Lodge of the AF & AM.

Mr. Kay is survived by his wife, Amanda; one son, Gene, of Arlington; 3 grandchildren, Cindy, Alan and Lori Kay; one sister, Elsie Walker of Omaha; and one brother, Hans of Fort Calhoun. Five sisters preceded him in death.
