Walter Harris “Andy” Andrews, 86, of Blair, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997 at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Services were Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Blair. Burial was in the Blair Cemetery.

Andrews was born March 26, 1911 in Sturgis, Meade County, S.D., to Conger Vincent and Maude Ellen (Loop) Andrews. He attended the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City, S.D. On June 14, 1936, he married Helene Katherine (the daughter of Dr. Homer D. and Lola Cecile (Beard) Lurvey) Lurvey in Rapid City. They lived in Hay Springs and Chadron, Nebr., and briefly in Key West, Fla. during World War II and then moved to Omaha where he worked in the Martin Bomber Plant and for Interstate Machinery and Supply. He came to Blair in 1947 to be the assistant utilities superintendent and then served as Blair utilities superintendent in charge of electricity, water and sewer utilities in 1977.

He was a long-time member of the Blair Volunteer Fire Department, served as chief from 1949 to 1959 and was one of the organizers of the Blair Rescue Squad and an active volunteer until his retirement. He was a former member of the Lions Club, the Blair Chamber of Commerce and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors are his wife, Helene; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jo and Richard Kubie of Blair and Ellen Jean and Robert Fisher of Fox Lake, Wis.; six grandchildren, Scott and Quan Kubie of Omaha; Kristine Jo Kubie of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Brian Fisher of Eagan, Minn.; Tara Fisher of Fox Lake, Wis.; and Kathy Fisher of Madison, Wis.; a sister, Edna Gregory in Sturgis and a brother, Fay C. “Bob” Andrews of near Key West, Fla.

Memorials may be directed to the Blair Rescue Squad or the Blair Volunteer Fire Department.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
