EDWARD F. SMITH, 82

Edward F. Smith, 82, of Fort Calhoun, died Friday, July 3, 2009, in Fort Calhoun.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun. Interment will be in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m Tuesday, July 7, at the church, with a vigil Mass at 7 p.m.

Edward Francis Smith was born Dec. 14, 1926, in Varina, Iowa.

He attended and graduated from St. Columbkille School in Sioux City, Iowa.

He entered the United States Army in June 1945 and served in Germany as a staff sergeant. He was honorably discharged in November of 1946.

Mr. Smith then worked at a barbership in Newell, Iowa, for a year and a half. He moved to Omaha in 1954 and worked as an underwriter for National Indemnity and Empire Fire and Marine. He also worked in a barbershop in Crescent, Iowa, as a side job.

On Nov. 17, 1962, he married Molly Schomburg at St. Cecelia’s Cathedral in Omaha. Mr. Smith was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Molly; their three specially-chosen adopted children, David, Timothy and Mary Kay; and a sister, Marie Nielson of Storm Lake, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph; infant sister and a son, Timothy.

Memorials are suggested to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church or the Fort Calhoun Fire and Rescue Department.

Age 82, Fort Calhoun. Preceded in death by parents; brother Joseph; infant sister; son Timothy. Survived by wife, Molly Smith of Fort Calhoun; son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Jo Smith of Omaha; daughter-in-law Michelle Smith of Omaha; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kay and Joseph Matthies of Omaha; sister Marie Nielsen of Storm Lake, IA; 6 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, 5-8 pm with Vigil Service at 7 pm at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Fort Calhoun, NE. Funeral Mass is Wednesday 9 am, also at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Interment is Fort Calhoun Cemetery. Memorials to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church or Fort Calhoun Fire and Rescue.
