EVERETT GEORGE (SMITTY) SMITH, 71

Everett George “Smitty” Smith, 71, of Sedalia, Mo., died Saturday, Dec. 5, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation was from 3-8:30 p.m. on Monday.

Mr. Smith was a school bus driver for Fort Calhoun during his retirement years.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 25, 1927, to Raymond A. Smith and Henrietta (Bauman) Smith. He grew up in Omaha and was raised by his mother and stepfather, John Trauther, after his father’s death.

Mr. Smith attended North High School in Omaha. On May 26, 1950, he married Joyce L. Braklow. He was employed by the Omaha Fire Department as a firefighter.

He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and the U.S. Army during World War II and occupational forces of Japan.

Mr. Smith belonged to the Benson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2503. He enjoyed woodworking, refinishing furniture, reading and refurbishing his turn of the century home.

He will be remembered for the love he showed his wife of 48 years, Joyce, and for the love he gave to his children and grandchildren. He will also be remembered for his dedication as a firefighter and for the joy he derived from driving the children of Fort Calhoun to and from school during his retirement.

Survivors are his wife, Joyce, their three daughters, Susan Smith Amweg of LaVista, Barbara Smith Head of Omaha and Mary Jo Smith Beig of Boise, Idaho; his brother, Ralph O. Smith; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Fort Calhoun Public Schools and Fort Calhoun Fire and Rescue.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Jeannie Peacock and Lillian Landis.
