Services Held Thursday For John Katt

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon for John William Katt, 89, who passed away Sunday evening at his home in Hooper. Services were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. A.H. Gebhardt officiating. Interment was at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont, with Wollmer & Warne in charge.

Music for the service was by the St. John’s Lutheran Choir with Mrs. James Dam as organist. Pallbearers were Gilbert, Wilbert, Alvin, Velmar, Harvey and Harry Katt.

Mr. Katt was born August 1, 1875, in Hanover, Germany, and was baptized in the early months and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Hanover.

Mr. Katt and his brother Henry came to the United States in 1892, locating at Fremont. Mr. Katt was 16 and Henry, 15. After engaging in farm work for four years, they sent money to Germany for another brother and sister to come across. In 1900 their folks came with the two youngest boys who went to school here.

John stated farming with his father, who died in 1912 at the age of 63.

On April 28, 1915, John Katt and Emma Bohling were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Winslow. They became the parents of three children: two daughters, (Hilda) Mrs. Wallace Wittman of Hooper, and Orletha at home; and a son, Elmer of Herman. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Katt of Fremont.

Mr. Katt farmed for 12 years in Washington County and then moved to Winslow on a small acreage. In 1954 they moved to Hooper.

He was a church member at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Hooper and then transferred to the former St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Winslow, where he was a member for 30 years, after which he was transferred to St. ______
