Gerhard J. Nygaard, 90

Gerhard J. Nygaard, 90, of Northfield, Minn., formerly of Blair, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at the Northfield Retirement Community.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the chapel of the Northfield Retirement Community. Burial will be in Willow Creek Danish Cemetery, Royal, Iowa. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home and on Thursday at the NRC chapel one hour prior to services.

Gerhard J. Nygaard was born Sept. 22, 1924, at Winnetoon, the son of Nels and Carrie Nygaard. He attended high school at Royal, Kennard and Blair, graduating from Blair in 1942.

He worked for a Blair attorney and on his father's farm until December 1943, when he was inducted into the U.S. Navy. He was transferred to the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., where he graduated as an x-ray technician.

After being discharged in June 1946, he attended Dana College for four years. He then entered Trinity Seminary at Blair and graduated in 1953.

He was married to Betty Jensen of Spencer, Iowa, on May 30, 1952. Their first parish was a home mission congregation in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The second parish was two congregations in the Cushing-Luck, Wis. area.

During the summers of 1963 and 1964, Gerhard took courses in the field of aging at Augsburg College, Minneapolis.

In 1964, his family moved to Bowman, N.D., where he was administrator-chaplain of Sunset Nursing Home.

They moved again and he worked 20 years for the Northfield Retirement Center.

He retired in 1989.

Gerhard served as secretary and as president of the Northfield Rotary Club, president of the Northfield Seniors and of St. Peter's Senior Fellowship. In 1990, he was named an honorary member of the Minnesota Association of Homes for the Aging.

He is survived by his daughters: Linda of Northfield, Debra (Harvey Meyer) of Minneapolis, Sandra Skura of Woodbury, Minn., and Lisa of Northfield; two grandchildren: Megan Launer of San Francisco and Thomas Launer of Ethiopia; sister-in-law Eva Nygaard of Owatonna, Minn.; brothers-in-law: Fred Jensen of Willmar, Minn., and Dale Hill of Milton, Pa.; many nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, four sisters and twin daughters. Memorials may go to the Northfield Retirement Center Foundation.
