Adam Butts

The remains of Adam Butts, a former resident of this community was brought here from Tilden, Neb., Friday for burial in the Kennard cemetery by the side of his wife. Short services at the grave were conducted by Rev. W. C. George and a choir sang. Mr. Butts was 87 years old and has made his home with a son and son-in-law at Tilden for several years. He is survived by several sons and grandchildren.

DEATH OF WILLIAM A BUTTS

A brief mention was made last week of the death of William A. Butts, father of J. W. Butts, who passed away at the J. R. Sutherland home northwest of Tilden Wednesday afternoon, February 17th, at the advanced age of eighty-seven years and one month. He had been in his usual health until about a week prior to his death.

William A. Butts was born in Virginia on January 17, 1839, and continued to make his home in that state until about 1880 when he removed to Nebraska, locating in Washington county, near Kennard. In 1859 he was married to Miranda Miller and to this union seven children were born, three of whom with his beloved wife, preceded him in death. For the past twenty-six years he has made his home with his son-in-law Mr. J. R. Sutherland.

Mr. Butts is survived by four sons, James R. and W. F. of Benge, Washington, J. W. of Tilden and F. M. of Fremont.

The deceased was converted in early life and because of his sterling Christian character he was given a local preacher’s license which he held for more than fifty years.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. H. Johnson, were held in the First Methodist church of this city at 3:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon. Following the services the body was conveyed to the Marshall Undertaking parlors where it remained until Friday morning when it was taken to the depot and thence by train to Kennard, Neb., for burial beside his wife.

Note: Information received from family: Children were Eliza Isabelle 1860-1922 married Joseph A. Gugin, died Umatilla Co., OR; James Robert 1863-1936; William Fletcher 1866-1944; Jacob Willis 1867-1947; John E. W. 1869-1901; Mary Catherine 1873-1914 married J. R. Sutherland; Franklin Milton 1877-1942. All born in Washington County, VA. His wife was Charity Miranda Miller.

Note: William is buried in the Kennard Cemetery, Blk 6 Lot 14 Sp 2.
