GERTRUDE MERRITT BURIED AT BLAIR THURSDAY, MARCH 11

Gertrude May Allen Merritt, the daughter of Washington County pioneers, Scott and Adele Allen, was born June 19, 1906 at Blair, Nebraska, and passed away March 9, 1976 in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 69 years.

Gertrude attended Washington County Schools and graduated from Blair High School. She also attended Midland College and Dana College. She devoted many years to the teaching profession, having taught in the Washington and Douglas County rural schools. From 1959 to 1974 she taught Dist. 41 north of Elkhorn. She was a member of the Douglas County Teacher’s Association and upon her retirement she was made honorary member. She also was a member of the Elk City Methodist Church and W.S.C.S.

Gertrude was married on March 23, 1927 to Charles W. Merritt. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Adele Givens of Omaha; Mrs. Gene (Ann) Denker of Elkhorn; Mrs. Walter (Charlotte) Murphy of Northfield, N. J.; one son, Delbert Merritt of Scottsbluff, Nebraska and 14 grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, John Allen of Omaha and Mac Allen of Blair. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers, Walter, William and Rollo Allen and her sister, Mrs. Odile Cary.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Swanson Funeral Home in Elkhorn with the Rev. Susan Davies conducting the service. Burial was made in the Blair Cemetery.

Pallbearers, all nephews, were, Gerald Allen, Chauncey Allen, Mark Allen, David Allen, Scott Allen and Robert Allen.
