Andrew “Andy” Reed Sorensen, 31, of Blair, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999.

Funeral services for Andrew Reed Sorensen are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Blair High School. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Blair.

Andrew Sorensen was born Sept. 3, 1967, to Ronald and Kathleen (O’Hanlon) Sorensen in Blair.

He graduated from Blair High School in 1985. He attended Hastings College for one year before transferring to the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he graduated in 1990.

He earned a master’s degree in music education from UNO in 1997 and began teaching in Blair in 1990 as an instrumental music teacher at Arbor Park Middle School.

He became the instrumental music director at Blair High School in 1991.

He was honored as the Jack R. Snider Outstanding Young Music Educator by the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association in 1994 and received the HunTel Golden Apple Award in 1998.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Ron and Nancy Sorensen of Blair; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill of Atlantic, Iowa; Tom and Martha of Blair; Ron Jr. and Jennifer of Blair; and Chris of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and Ming-Guang Chen of Omaha; Molly and Aaron Meeves of Blair; Libby and James Leone of Bradenton, Fla.; Kate and Byron Carter of Omaha; Janace and Pat Grover of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Alice and Dean Elder of Bellevue; stepbrother ______ Dierks of Fremont; stepsister, Karen Pruess of Oakland; _____Weymeyer of Nickerson; grandparents, Blanche and ____ Stanley of Omaha; step-grandmother, Betty Allberry of Omaha; and 18 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen.

Blair, Neb. - - All Andy Sorensen ever wanted to be was a band director. And the 31-year-old Sorensen, in his seven-year tenure as band director at Blair High School, achieved his dream.

On Tuesday, just one day after the start of school, Sorensen collapsed while jogging and later died, apparently of a heart attack.

Funeral services for the 1985 Blair High School graduate will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Blair High School.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Ron and Nancy Sorensen of Blair; brothers, William of Atlantic, Iowa; Tom and Ron Jr., both of Blair; and Chris of San Francisco; sisters, Molly Meeves of Blair; Peggy Chen and Kate Carter, both of Omaha; Janace Grover of Council Bluffs; Alice Elder of Bellevue; and Libby Leone of Bradenton, Fla.; and grandmother, Blanche Stanley of Omaha.
