Harold J. Smith, 82

Harold J. Smith, 82, of Blair, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, with a Rosary at 7 p.m., at Campbell-Aman Funeral home in Blair.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair. Graveside services will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Blair, with military honors commanded by Mr. Smith’s grandson, William Smith, of Company C 1-168th Infantry of the Iowa National Guard in Denison.

Harold J. Smith was born March 16, 1922, in Lindsay to John and Ruth (McCreedy) Smith. He graduated from Lindsay High School in 1940.

On July 19, 1944, he married Dolores Williby in Blair.

After his service in the military, Mr. Smith worked as a welder for Fruehauf in Omaha for 33 years, then worked an additional five years for Kelly Ryan in Blair, retiring in 1986.

He loved cars, and traded often for the newest model.

He was a member of the Blair VFW and St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Bill and Judy Smith and Paul and Chris Smith, all of Blair, and John and Mateel Smith of Omaha; a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Gary Niver of Omaha; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law: Ken Smith of Norfolk, Melvin and Arlene Smith of York, Raymond and Arlena Smith of Burrton, Kan., Virgil and Carol Smith of Casper, Wyo.; two sisters and brother-in-law: Janella Smith of Norfolk, and Donna Mae and Bill Ross of Lakewood, Colo., sister-in-law, Nellie Smith of Jenks, Okla.; and son-in-law, LeRoy Stevens of Blair.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores; daughters: Pam Stevens and Cindy Nelson; and four brothers: Maurice, Robert, Norbert and Willis.
