Hazel L. Method Smith, 88

Services for Hazel L. Method Smith, 88, who died February 19, 1994 at Tekamah are 2 p.m. Thursday, February 22 at First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah. Rev. Charles Mills is officiating. Burial will be in the Craig Cemetery at Craig, Nebraska.

Hazel L. Method Smith was born northwest of Tekamah on the farm home of her parents, Nelson and Anna Webster Method, on November 29, 1905. She received her education in the country schools of the area and graduated from high school at Tekamah. During the summer of 1924, she received her teaching certificate at Wayne State Teacher’s College and became a teacher in Burt County’s rural schools for four years.

She married Garnet “Pete” Smith June 20, 1928 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They made their home on the farm 10 miles northwest of Tekamah until they retired and moved to Tekamah.

They shared a big outdoor display of Christmas lights with many visitors during the years they lived on the farm. They also received numerous square dancing awards, including the 1985 Honored Couple award from the Omaha Square Dance Council. In the late 1980’s, after 60 years of square dancing, they were honored for being the oldest square dance couple in Nebraska.

She wrote news for local newspapers, beginning in the 1920s until her retirement in November, 1993.

She also was a member of the Cancer Support Group and worked with the Cancer Society. In addition, her volunteer work included providing cakes, cookies and bars at the Tekamah Nursing Center for many years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Tekamah, served as president of the Dorcas Society and was a member of the Sunshine Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garnet; her parents, Nels and Anna Method, and three brothers: Keith Method, Roland Method and Kenneth Method.

She is survived by her son, Les Smith of Adrian, Missouri; her sister, Margaret Fetty of Grant Pass, Oregon; two sisters-in-law, Doris Method of Tekamah and Eunice Method of Sioux City; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Casket bearers were Jeff Uhing, Jim Pipher, Floyd Hilgenkamp, Ward Odell, Roger Meierhenry and Gerald Chamberlain.

Charyn Mills was organist.
