Estimable Lady Dies

On Friday the community was shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. J.G. Smith, wife of Dr. Smith of this city, who passed away at an Omaha hospital that morning.

Mrs. Smith was taken to Omaha and submitted to a surgical operation, but the surgeons failed to discover the cause of her trouble and she lived but a few hours.

Hester Caroline Hubbard was born at Glenwood, Iowa, March 21, 1879, and died on her thirty-fourth birthday, March 21, 1913. She was married to Dr. J.G. Smith, May 30, 1899. Four children were born to this union, Edna, Wayne, Golda and Mabel, who with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Hubbard, one brother, Willis Hubbard, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma McCauley and Mrs. Bessie Davis, survive her.

Mrs. Smith was a most lovable woman, of a quiet, sweet disposition, conscientious to the last degree; a woman who was loved by a large circle of friends for her kindly deeds, her noble influence and many womanly qualities.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Easter Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. C.P. Lang spoke feelingly of the pure life of the deceased, comparing it to the Easter lily, the emblem of the day on which she was buried. His discourse was a most beautiful, touching one, and there was scarcely a dry eye in the congregation of friends who filled the church.

A quartette, consisting of Dr. C.R. Mead, Miss Ethel Mead and Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Sams, sang several selections appropriate for the sad obsequies. All that was mortal of this dear woman was taken to the Blair cemetery for its final rest.

The deep sympathy and love of the host of friends of the deceased are extended the parents, husband and children in this, the greatest sorrow of their lives, and all that kind hearts and willing hands can do is being done to alleviate the grief.

‘But she has left a legacy to her children far more precious than jewels—rare—that of the most priceless value’—a pure motherhood.
