RUDY STANGEL, 84

Services for Rudy B. Stangel, 84 of Dodge who died May 6, 1992 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point were Saturday, May 9 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge. Rev. Mel Wiese officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Rudy B. Stangel was born March 25, 1908 in Osmond. He attended St. Leo’s Catholic grade school in Snyder and Snyder High School. He worked with his father in the harness-making and shoe-making business in Snyder and later worked at Tuchenhagen Hardware in Scribner.

He was a fireman at the Scribner Air Base until moving to Dodge in 1944 where he was a harness-maker. He later expanded the business to include retail shoe sales, shoe repair and truck-tarp manufacturing, becoming semi-retired in 1972. He continued to repair shoes.

He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge; its Holy Name Society; was current financial secretary of the Catholic Order of Foresters; and received the Medal of Honor from that organization. He was a past member of the Dodge Chamber of Commerce; a past 20-year member of the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department; and played baseball with the Elkhorn Valley League.

He married Sophia Heywood June 11, 1936 in Snyder. She preceded him in death October 21, 1975.

He married Frances Schulte Kampschneider April 29, 1978 in North Bend.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; two brothers, four sisters and a grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; two daughters, Betty (Mrs. Harold) Ortmeier of Blair and Mary Ellen (Mrs. Robert) Eifert of Dodge; a stepson, Alvin Kampschneider of Omaha; three stepdaughters, Georgene (Mrs. William) La Porta of Rancho Cordova, California; Mary Ann (Mrs. Edward) Svitak of Howells and Yvonne (Mrs. Leo) Niewohner of Lyons; two brothers, Frank of San Diego, California and Wilfred of Fremont; two sisters, Catherine Chudomelka of Dodge and Dolores (Mrs. Melvin) Kelberlau of Columbus; 25 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Humlicek Funeral Home in Dodge was in charge of arrangements.
