CHAMPION HUSKER HENRY SORENSEN DIED IN ARIZONA

Henry Sorensen, former Washington County farmer and twice the Nebraska Champion Cornhusking Champion, died Tuesday in Apache Junction, Arizona. He was 78 years of age. He was born in Staplehurst, Nebraska.

Mr. Sorensen had not been feeling well and was at his doctor’s office when he died.

Henry was a brother of Gudmond Sorensen and William Sorensen, all of whom lived on the bottomlands north of Blair and were successful farmers. His wife and an only child, Glenn, had preceded him in death. A sister, Naomi Sorensen, lives in Blair.

Gudmond Sorensen, who sold his farming interests here less than a year ago, now lives at Great Falls, Montana. William Sorensen lives at Falls City. There are three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren surviving.

Henry became a nationally known figure some forty years ago before the days of mechanical corn pickers. For two consecutive years he bested all comers in picking corn. The state contests at that time took on the appearance of a giant fair with thousands of spectators following the contestants across the fields much the same as is done in golf tournaments today. The contests featured tents filled with equipment, hot dog stands and all the fanfare of a state fair.

After retiring from active farming here, the Sorensens moved to Exeter, Missouri where he purchased a small place. Exeter is in the extreme southeast corner of Missouri near the Arkansas line.

Burial will be at Exeter beside his wife and son.
