Harvey L. Kay, 69

Harvey L. Kay, 69, of Herman died June 30, 2006, in rural Tekamah as a result of injuries he sustained in a logging accident.

Funeral services were July 6, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah.

Harvey Lee Kay was born Dec. 22, 1936, on the family farm near Blair to Herman Carl and Helen Margaret (Thaden) Kay.

He attended grade school at Crookshank country school, which was located at the edge of his parent’s property. In 1955, he graduated from Blair High School, where he was on the honor roll and active in all aspects of FFA.

On Nov. 28, 1960, he married Barbara K. Mumford. The couple lived in Kennard and had two children, Cammie and Judith. In 1970, he married Patricia Partcher. They had one child, Timothy, and lived in Blair.

Mr. Kay moved to a farm four miles west of Herman in 1971, where he lived for the next 35 years.

He enjoyed the outdoors and working in the timber, which led him to start his logging business when he was in his teens. He spent the next 50 years doing what he loved. He is remembered as being excellent with numbers; “he could figure the board feet in a log in his head faster than you could tell him the measurements,” his family notes. He loved his occupation and the freedom of being his own boss.

He loved hunting, fast cars, motorcycles and collecting guns. He also had a love for animals. All of his pets had names, including the cows. He also enjoyed gardening and planted many flowers.

Mr. Kay accepted everyone into his heart. He loved life and was a friend to everyone. He loved company at this home and spending time with friends and family. He was a loving and giving person and always helped anyone who asked for it.

He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was always present for any activities his grandchildren were involved in, rooting them on. He was deeply loved by his family and by all who knew his heart.

He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Cammie and David Methney of Laurel and Judy and Paul Anderson of Tekamah; son, Timothy Lee Kay Sterner of Missouri; stepsons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Maria Guy of Blair, Shannon Guy and Beth Guy, both of Lincoln, Chad and Jennifer Guy of Omaha; nine grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah was in charge of arrangements.
