MRS. MARIAH J. KING

The death of Mrs. Mariah J. King occurred Monday evening, April 6, at her home on west Colfax street, following a short illness caused by asthma which was greatly aggravated by an attack of influenza.

Mariah J. Arnold was born in Iowa February 14, 1844 and was therefore past eight-one years of age at the time of her death. She removed to Cleveland, Ohio, with her parents when but a small child. She was married April 28, 1864 to Jonathan King at Clinton, Illinois where they resided for a number of years. They later lived at Jefferson, Iowa. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Etta Brandt of Blair and Mrs. Iola E. Rosa of Lincoln, Neb., both of whom survive. The family moved to Blair ten years ago and has since made this city their home. Mr. King passed away August 1, 1919.

Besides the daughters, the deceased leaves two sisters, Mrs. J.W. Erwin of Blair and Mrs. S.E. Huddleston of Miami, Florida.

Mrs. King was an active worker in the Woman’s Relief Corps at Jefferson, Iowa, having held all the offices of the Corps as well as being a national delegate for the Corps.

She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star at Jefferson but on account of her husband’s ill health after moving to Blair and her own growing deafness, she did not affiliate with the local organizations. She was a member of the E. church of Jefferson.

Her death was a great shock to her family and neighbors as she had been apparently quite well, working for several hours in her garden and yard but a few days previous to her illness.

She and her oldest daughter, Mrs. Brandt, have lived together for years and she will be greatly missed by her and by her friends and neighbors who have enjoyed her cheery smile and kindly interest in every one. She was a good mother, a kindly neighbor and a loyal friend.

Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday afternoon, April 8, at 2 o’clock. Mrs. S.E. Evans of the W.R.C. read the obituary and offered a prayer.

The body was taken to Lincoln this morning and burial made in Wyuka cemetery beside the husband.
