JAMES SYLVIS, 79

(veteran, Civil War)

Uncle James Sylvis passed peacefully away at 5 o'clock this morning of diseases incident to old age, he being almost 80 years of age. He has been failing for some time and the end wasn't unexpected. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Friday from the Methodist church. Mr. Sylvis was born in Indiana county, Pa., Oct. 3rd, 1837, and served for over three years in the Civil War with Co. D of the 105th Pa infantry. He was wounded in the breast in the battle of the Wilderness and carried the bullet with him the balance of his life. He was married at Cherry Tree, Pa., Feb. 3rd, 1870, to Nancy Yingling, coming to this county about thirty years ago. Besides the widow he is survived by four sons and three daughters; Fred lives at Hermosa, S.D., Charles out at Fontanelle, Roscoe and John here in Blair, Mrs. Elza King at DeSoto, Mrs. Henry Borcherding at Fontanelle, and Mrs. Harry Smith of this city. Mr. Sylvis was a good husband and father and therefore a good citizen who will be missed and mourned by all who knew him.

James Sylvis, well-known and highly respected citizen, died at his home in this city on last Wednesday morning.

Deceased had been a patient sufferer for some time and the end, while a shock to the family, was not unexpected. He was of advanced age and a Civil War Veteran. He was at his death past seventy-nine years and leaves an aged wife, four sons and three daughters to mourn his loss.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist Church on last Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock and interment was made in the Blair Cemetery.
