Michal Szlachetka, 94, of Fort Calhoun, died Monday, March 12, 2007, in Blair.

A funeral Mass was held March 15, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun. Interment was in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

Michal "Mike" Szlachetka was born Sept. 6, 1912, in the village of Mierzejewo, near Leszno, Poland.

He was part of the Polish Army Underground during World War II and, at the end of the war, served as Allied Military Police in Germany. During this time, he met and married Felicia Kluza.

They immigrated to the United States in October 1951. In 1952, they settled in Fort Calhoun and Mr. Szlachetka was a lifelong employee of the Neale farms.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jan and Connie Szlachetka of Knoxville, Iowa, and Mike Jr. and Kim Szlachetka of Fort Calhoun; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Anne and Rick Jaworski of Fort Calhoun, Frieda and Dan Helm of Nashville, and Nellie Szlachetka of Blair; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Felicia.

Memorials are suggested to the Fort Calhoun Rescue Squad.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

VISITATION Wed. 3-8 pm, with family receiving friends from 6-8 pm, at Funeral Home. FUNERAL MASS Thurs. 10 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Ft. Calhoun. Interment Ft. Calhoun Cemetery. Memorials suggested to Ft. Calhoun Rescue Squad.
