John Kirschbaum

John Kirschbaum, 88, of Blair died April 19, 2010, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 24, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Interment was held at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Defiance.

John “Jack” Kirschbaum, was born May 12, 1921, in Shelby County, Iowa, to John, Sr. and Frances (Rosman) Kirschbaum. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic church in Defiance, Iowa, and attended country school in Shelby County.

He enjoyed going to area dances and it was there that he met his future wife, Mildred. On April 6, 1942, he married Mildred M. Gau. After their wedding, the couple farmed near Defiance. They remained on the farm until 1983, when they moved to Defiance.

After retiring from farming, Mr. Kirschbaum helped do the mowing and snow removal at St. Peter’s Catholic. He also worked for Shelby County as the maintenance and groundskeeper at Manteno State Park.

Family was very important to Mr. and Mrs. Kirschbaum. Their home was always considered the gathering place and he treasured the many meals and get-togethers he had with his family. Mr. Kirschbaum was always the head of the family and was often looked to for guidance and advice.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Bob Pine of Omaha, and Judy and Larry Green of Blair; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sharon Kirschbaum of Sheldon, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Leone Gilmore and Mary Ann Schwinderman, both of Omaha, Robert and Carol Kirschbaum of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Donald and Kay Kirschbaum of Omaha; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; an infant daughter; sisters, Ione and Marjorie; and his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Rose.
