Doak Wegner, 58

Doak Wegner, 58, of West Point died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at the Pender Community Hospital.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Monday, March 16, at the Zion Lutheran Church, rural Bancroft. Interment will be in the Bancroft Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Sunday at the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point and continues Monday from noon to 2 p.m. at the church.

Doak Leon Wegner was born Dec. 6, 1956, at Oakland, to Lester and Eva June (Block) Wegner.

He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. Doak attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School and graduated from Bancroft High School in 1975.

On July 1, 1978, he married his high school sweetheart Patty Larsen at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft. The couple farmed near Bancroft and in 2000 moved into Bancroft.

In June 2014, they moved to West Point.

Doak was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, serving as elder, was head usher and on the Zion Lutheran School board. Doak played for the West Point Bombers baseball team from 1979 to 1992, coached Zion basketball, and had coached junior high basketball at Bancroft-Rosalie. He served on the Bancroft Baseball Board and was a longtime coach for Little League Baseball in Bancroft and also coached the NE All-Stars from 1992 to 2006. Doak ran the clock at the football and basketball games at Bancroft-Rosalie, kept book for Pender American Legion games and also drove the activity bus for Bancroft-Rosalie High School.

Doak enjoyed taking trips with his family, was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and especially enjoyed being “Papa” to his grandkids.

He is survived by wife Patty of West Point; children: Matthew and Angie Wegner of West Point and children Braylon, Jaxson, Riley and Hudson, Rebecca and Tyler Weborg of West Point and children Nevaeh, Adara and Nora, Jessica Wegner of West Point and Joshua Wegner of West Point; father Lester Wegner of Bancroft; brothers: Tim and Jolie Wegner of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Scott and Kathy Wegner of Bennington; parents-in-law Robert and Myra Larsen of Blair; sister-in-law-Brenda and Tim Nelson of Johnson Lake; brother-in-law Robbie and Kim Larsen of Bennington; and several nieces and nephews.

Doak was preceded in death by his mother, Eva June Wegner; and sister-in-law-Terri Larsen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family for future designation.

FUNERAL SERVICES will be on Monday, March 16, 2015 at 2pm at the Zion Lutheran Church, rural Bancroft, NE. Interment will be in the Bancroft Cemetery. VISITATION will be on Sunday from 3-8pm at the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point and will continue on Monday from 12 noon-2pm at the church. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested to direct memorials to the family for future designation. On Monday the service will be broadcast to the Zion Lutheran School to accommodate additional seating.
