Robert R. Kundel, 70

Robert R. Kundel, 70, of Chamberlain, S.D., died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23, at the United Church of Christ Congregation Church in Minden, Iowa, with Pastor Denny Peterson officiating. Interment will be in the Minden Cemetery, with military graveside services provided by American Legion Post No. 437 of Minden.

Robert Ray Kundel was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Minden, Iowa, to Ray and Pearl (Ivers) Kundel. His parents were lifelong members of the United Church of Christ Congregational Church in Minden, and, along with his eight brothers and sisters, he was baptized and confirmed in this church. All were active in Sunday School, church and choir.

Dr. Kundel graduated from Minden High School in 1949, and completed his pre-medical education at Omaha University. He received his MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1956. He competed his radiology residency at the University of Minnesota.

On June 6, 1958, he married Joanne Pierce in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple had three sons.

Dr. Kundel was a radiologist in Rice Lake, Wis., for more than 20 years and in Chamberlain, S.D. , for 12 years. He served in the United States Air Force, and was appointed captain in 1959, major in 1963, lieutenant colonel in 1968, and colonel in 1974. He also served as a flight surgeon in the Minnesota Army National Guard.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and Boy Scout activities with his three sons, each of whom became an Eagle Scout. He also enjoyed flying, restoring airplanes, and antique guns. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, the American Medical Association, and the Aerospace Medical Association. He was a recipient of the United States of America Meritorious Service Medal, authorized by the president, for outstanding military service to the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard.

On Aug. 31, 1991, he married Kathi Nogy.

He is survived by his second wife, Kathi, of Chamberlain; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Janet Kundel of Marshfield, Wis., Karl and Lisa Kundel of Eau Claire, Wis., and Kurt and Lisa Kundel of Forest Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren; stepchildren and spouses, Anthony Nogy of Chamberlain, S. D., Nannette and Ron Biggers, and Shannon Nogy; four step-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Donald and Kathy Kundel of Duluth, Minn., Dr. David and Margaret Kundel of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Dr. Ray and Maria Kundel of Duluth, and Dr. Richard Kundel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Lavonne and Roger Olsen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Bonnie and Art Boltz of Camano Island, Wash., Carolyn Kundel of Roland Iowa, and Dorothy and Roger Olson of Blair; nine nieces, eight nephews and two grandnieces.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Kidney Foundation.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
