SERVICES HELD FOR WALTER PRESTON STANLEY

Services were held Monday, December 26 at Sievers-Sprick Home in Fort Calhoun for Walter Preston Stanley, 91, who died December 23, 1983 at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair after a lingering illness.

The Rev. Dale K. Westadt officiated. Burial was in Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

Walter Preston Stanley was born January 25, 1892, to Almon and Hettie Preston Stanley near Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. He grew up in that community, attending school at Slader School.

He and his brother, Lester, farmed until World War I. He left in October, 1917, to serve his country, returning in April, 1919, after several months of active duty in France.

After his return, he and his brothers, Lester and Dwight, and his sister, Edith, rented a farm near DeSoto. Following Dwight’s death, the three continued to farm in that area and in 1944, Walter, Lester and Edith purchased the William Lorenzen farm where they continued to live until July, 1983, when they moved to Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Blair. He also belonged to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Dwight in January 1921, and Harvey.

He is survived by his brother, Lester; and his sister, Edith. Two nephews, Floyd Stanley, Council Bluffs, Iowa; and John Stanley, Valley, Nebraska; two nieces, Mrs. Pearl Hender, Bell, California; and Mrs. Jeanette Couch of Odessa, Missouri; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Pallbearers were John Lorenzen, Phillip Lorenzen, Carl Lorenzen, Lester W. Stanley, John Burmeister, Randy Truhlsen and Raymon Jensen.

Honorary pallbearers were Edward Lorenzen, Stanley Ohrt, Stanley Stirek, William Burmeister, Gifford Nielsen, Everett Haynes, James G. Jensen, and Ralph Steyer.

Laura Dey was solist. Carol Sprick was organist.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
