Donald A. Staples, 78 of Fort Smith, Ark., died April 2, 2008. Funeral services were April 5 at the Hammons Family Funeral Chapel in Weeping Water. Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery in Nehawka.
Donald Albert Staples was born Oct. 3, 1929 in Omaha to Albert and Mary Elizabeth (McConnaha) Staples.
He graduated from Blair High School in 1947 and with a bachelor of science in music from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1951.
On Feb. 17, 1952, he married Margaret Knabe.
He served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954 in Germany during the Korean War.
Mr. Staples taught music in a number of schools, including Polk and Creighton, Neb., as well as Mapleton and Bloomfield, Iowa, before retiring and moving to be near his family.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Elizabeth Gray of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Donna Murphy of Fort Smith, Ark.; son, Jeffrey Staples of Kansas City, Mo.; three grandchildren; sister, Mary Helen Bergman of Omaha.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska on October 3, 1929, the son of the late Albert and Mary Elizabeth (McConnaha) Staples. He was in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 with time in Germany during the Korean War. Graduated with a B.S. in Music from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1951. He married Margaret Knabe on February 17, 1952. Donald taught music in several schools: Polk, NE; Creighton, NE; Mapleton, IA; and Bloomfield, IA. before retiring and moving to be near family. Donald is survived by his wife, two daughters, Elizabeth Gray of Cincinnati, OH; Donna Murphy of Fort Smith, AR; a son, Jefferey Staples of Kansas City, MO; a sister, Mary Helen Bergman of Omaha, NE; and three grandchildren; former students and dear friends. Preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Service was held on Saturday, April 5th, at Hammons Family Funeral Chapel, Weeping Water, with Pastor Sandy Webster of the United Methodist Church providing words of comfort. A C.D. of Amazing Grace was played. The pallbearers were Jason Murphy, Holly Murphy, David Knabe, Krysti Knabe, and Daniel Knabe. Interment at St. John’s Cemetery, Nehawka, Nebraska.
