Marie E. Starkey, 79 of Fremont, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Shalimar Gardens in Fremont.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Neb. Interment will be in the St. Michael Catholic Cemetery at Spalding.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will also be held Friday at the church, one hour prior to services.

Marie E. McSharry was born Aug. 24, 1929 in Greeley to Joseph and Mary (Keating) McSharry. She grew up at Greeley and graduated from Greeley High School. She attended Creighton’s College of Nursing for two years.

On Nov. 17, 1951 she married Keith J. Starkey at Greeley. The couple lived in rural Cedar Rapids, where Mr. and Mrs. Starkey farmed. Mrs. Starkey moved to Fremont in 1979.

Mrs. Starkey was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont, and was a former member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.

She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Bonnie Starkey of Norfolk; Jerry and Sharon Starkey of Grand Island; and Tim and Gladys Starkey of Morse Bluff; six daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Kay Flessner and Joan Starkey and special friend, Rod Bade, all of Lincoln; Connie and Julian Whitaker of Corona del Mar, Calif.; Sally Townsend of Norfolk; Jan Guturrez of Yankton, S. D.; and Jill and Randy Schreck of Arlington; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law, Tom and Evelyn McSharry of Beaver Lake and Rita McSharry of Omaha; sister, Peggy Schoenduve of Sanger, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, in April 1972; a son, Larry Starkey; two brothers and two sisters; and a grandchild.
