Kennard News

Nellie Nissen, a teacher in the Lincoln schools, came home Friday evening to spend the weekend with her parents. She found her father very ill with bronchial pneumonia, and he passed away Sunday afternoon. Our community was greatly surprised to hear of the death of Mr. Nissen. His friends knew of his illness, but as he had been in poor health for a couple of years no one dreamed he would not rally. He was a pioneer merchant of Kennard and held a large acquaintance throughout the county. His health failing he sold out his business to A. Kroigard and retired to rest. Mr. Nissen was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge for several years. His family surviving are his wife and two daughters, Edna at home and Nellie. The funeral will be held this afternoon. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones.

Mrs. Laura Everson of Chicago, a sister of Mrs. Nissen, and George Nissen, of Kansas, a nephew of Mr. Nissen, arrived here for the funeral of Mr. Nissen.

Rev. Warne, of Pender, will officiate at the funeral of his friend, Mr. Nissen.

Nissen Obituary

Johannes Ewald Christian Nissen, the subject of this memoir, entered upon this life in Denmark, Jan. 5, 1841 and after a brief illness calmly fell asleep in death at Kennard, Neb. February 3, 1918, aged 77 years and 28 days.

Coming to this country in the year 1866, and locating in Kansas, where in 1886 he was united in marriage blessed this union, and today the wife and two daughters weep and mourn the departure of a true, loving, tender and kind husband and father. Mr. Nissen also leaves an aged brother and other relatives, with many friends and business associates who will mark with precious memories, his transition to life immortal, and as friends and neighbors we gather to express our sincere and profound sympathy with the bereaved; pay our tribute of respect and open the treasure of truth, comfort and consolation.

Mr. Nissen came to Kennard in 1889 and began the mercantile business and by strict application, honesty an genial treatment of every customer commanded the esteem and confidence of the entire community as the leading merchant, and became widely known as a good citizen ready and willing to promote every enterprise for the welfare and progress of the town and community serving for many years on the board of Village Trustees and the school Board and affiliating with the beneficiary and Fraternal Orders, ever exemplifying the virtues of friendship, benevolence and truth.

So from active useful service, full of days he has passed on to the reward and rest of a well spent life; and duty nobly done, and with perfect submission we bow to the will of Almighty God, saying; “Give joy or grief, give ease or pain. Take life or friends away. But let me find them all again, In that eternal day.”

Note: John is buried in Blk 2 Lot 24 Sp 2 in the Kennard Cemetery.
