Mrs. Marie Rathjen

Marie Rohwer was born in Kattbeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on May 13, 1850, and passed away at the home of her son, Emil Rathjen, on Feb. 6, 1930, at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 23 days.

She came to Omaha from Germany in 1870. Two years later she was untied in marriage to Nicholaus Rathjen and that year they moved to a farm near Fort Calhoun, where they resided until 1906, when they moved to Fort Calhoun. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rathjen: Emil, Mrs. Clara Hinrichsen and Mrs. Lena Fischer, the latter dying in 1912.

Her husband died February 27, 1927. Besides her two children she is survived by twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Rathjen was a sweet and estimable lady, and her departure is mourned by many friends, as well as by her relatives.

A large congregation attended the funeral services, which were held in the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon, Rev. Vanderlippe delivering the sermon. Interment was in the Ft. Calhoun cemetery.

Mrs. Nicholas Rathjen passed away at the home of her son, Emil Rathjen Thursday morning, Feb. 6 the age of 79 years, 8 months and 23 days. Marie Rohwer was born May 13, 1850, in Kattbeck, Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. She came to America in 1870, coming direct to Omaha. In 1872 she was united in marriage to Nicholas Rathjen and the same year came to the farm southwest of Ft. Calhoun where they resided until 1905 when they moved into Ft. Calhoun leaving their son, Emil to reside on the farm. They were the parents of three children, Emil Rathjen, Mrs. Clara Henricksen and Mrs. Lena Fischer, the latter died in 1912. She leaves to mourn her passing, two children, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her husband preceded her in death by almost three years, he having died Feb. 27, 1927. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. with Rev. A. B. Vanderlippe officiating and interment was made in the family lot beside the grave of her husband in the Ft. Calhoun cemetery.

Carl Rathjen and sister, Mrs. Wm. Buhrmann of Wausa, Neb., were in attendance at the funeral services of Mrs. Nicholas Rathjen Saturday. Other out of town relatives were Mrs. J. Thiefoldt, George and Chris Staben, all of Herman, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thiefoldt, Harry and Eddie of Orum.

Mrs. Naeve and daughter of Kennard, old time friends of Mrs. Rathjen, were also in attendance of the services.
