ANOTHER GOOD MAN GONE

IN THE RECENT DEATH OF MR. STEFFEN, WASHINGTON COUNTY LOSES GOOD CITIZEN

Having been stricken more than seven years ago with that dread disease, consumption, the vitality and life of Henry Fred Christ Steffen at last yielded to the merciless plague and at 11:30 o’clock Friday night, April 28, the death angel called and relieved him of all suffering, and the immortal soul of another of the stable and prosperous German-American citizens, to whom this country owes much for their having made this their adopted home, took its flight.

Henry Steffen was born May 28, 1853, at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, being 57 years and 11 months old at the time of his demise. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Kraft and after fourteen years of married life in their home country, decided to come to America, educate their children and establish for themselves a permanent home upon a little farm all their own. In this they were successful. Landing in New York, unfamiliar with the ways of the New World, they came direct to Nebraska, settling on a farm near the site of Ft. Calhoun in the year 1889. There they remained until one year ago, when it was decided to retire from active farm work and Blair was chosen as the city in which they would spend the declining years of their life.

To this happy union were born four children, three daughters and a son, all of whom are living, and who, with the widow, have the sympathy of the community in this hour of their bereavement. The children are as follows: Mrs. Wm. Frank, who lives near Arlington; Mrs. Henry Hendricksen of Ft. Calhoun; Mrs. Henry Tietjen of Carroll; and Julius Steffen of Bloomfield, all of whom were present at the last rites.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the German Lutheran church and were conducted by Rev. E. Eckhardt, and the body laid to rest in the Blair cemetery.
