Carl Robert Stendel, Jr., 70, of West Union, Iowa, died Saturday, April 25, 1999.

Services were Wednesday, April 28 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union.

The Rev. Carl R. Stoldt officiated.

Carl Robert Stendel, Jr., was born Jan. 1, 1929 to Carl Robert Sr., and Agnes Beatrice (Blockhus) Stendel in West Union, Iowa.

He graduated from West Union High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954.

On Oct. 17, 1959, he married Helen Sitterly in Waterloo, Iowa.

He worked in the Fayette County Engineer Office for more than 30 years and was a lifelong resident of West Union, Iowa.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, the West Union Country Club and the Cemetery Board.

He was also a member of the West Union Fire Department for 49 years and a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church for 58 years.

He is survived by his wife; his sister, Marilyn Masters of Blair; three aunts, Helen Drewes, Hazel Tope and Doris Blockhus, all of West Union, Iowa; nieces, Deb Detjens and Robin Ott of Blair, Jodi Workman and Juli Gomez; nephew, Robert Cortez of Omaha; and two great-nieces and two great-nephews.

Burnham & Wood Funeral Home in West Union, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
