David H. Swaney, 50, of Anchorage, Alaska, died Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the Carter House assisted living facility in Blair.

Funeral services were Wednesday, May 24, at Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Military honors were provided by the Julius F. Muller American Legion Post No. 337 of Missouri Valley. Interment was in the Magnolia (Iowa) Cemetery.

David H. Swaney was born Aug 10, 1955, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Howard and Ethel (Donnelson) Swaney. He attended and graduated from the West Harrison High School in Mondamin, Iowa, then spent the next five years in the Army stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, where he fell in love with Alaska and made his home there.

He played competitive softball for many years in Fairbanks and Anchorage. He also loved playing golf and spending time with his boys and friends.

His family noted, "David was a very loving, compassionate man who had a huge heart and was always the first to offer a helping hand."

He is survived by his sons, Josh, of Hawaii, Ryan and Adam, both of Anchorage; parents, Howared and Ethel Swaney of Modale, Iowa; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice and Mike McGaughey of Redding, Calif., Patricia and Kermit Goettsche of Albuquerque, N.M., Marilyn and Norman Clark of Temecula, Calif., Judy Neary of Branson, Mo., Linda Scheide of Modale, Iowa; brothers, James and Denny Swaney, both of Blair; grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey and Darwin.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
