Marvin A. Bartling, 91, of Fremont died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Nye Legacy Health and Rehab Center in Fremont.

Marvin was born April 13, 1918, in Fontanelle to Herman and Emma (Brandert) Bartling. He grew up on a farm eight miles east of Hooper. He attended Hooper High School until the family moved to Uehling in March of his sophomore year. He graduated from Uehling High School in 1935. He then moved to Fremont in 1937 at the age of 19.

Marvin married Marie Laudenklos on Jan. 1, 1941, to whom he was married to for 68 years. She preceded him in death on Feb. 4 of this year.

Marvin began with Valley Manufacturing on May 28, 1950, which later became Valmont Industries. He was actively involved with inventing and building the company’s first pipe mill. He retired on Oct. 31, 1969, at the age of 51.

Marvin was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont since 1948.

Among the recognition he received for his charitable giving in the community were the “Servant of the Lord” award from Salem Lutheran Church and being among the first inductees into the Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame in January 2008.

Survivors include: two daughters, Janet Thurman of Fremont and Dianne (and husband, Richard) Christensen of Hastings; four grandchildren, Rich (and wife, Srae) Christensen of Newman Lake, Wash., Tony (and wife, Julie) Thurman of Overland Park, Kan., Tammy (and husband, Ricki) Barber of Lincoln and Cheryl (and husband, Scott) Summer of Omaha; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan Christensen and Jeffrey Christensen of Newman Lake; Marcus, Whitney and Andrew Thurman of Overland Park; Jaxson Barber of Lincoln and Justin and Dana Summers of Omaha; and three sisters-in-law, Iona Laudenklos of Dodge, Lorraine Laudenklos of Columbus and Thelma Bartling of Fremont.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife; and three brothers, Byron, Gilbert and Leonard Bartling.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont with the Rev. Michael Thomas officiating. Visitation will be from 2 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont with the family receiving friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
