MRS. P. N. STILTS

March 4, 1911, another one was added to the fourteen or fifteen members of the pioneer Gilbert family that have been laid to rest in our Ft. Calhoun cemetery.

Mrs. P. N. Stilts, who died out in Cody, Wyoming, was the second wife of the pioneer probate judge of Washington county here at Ft. Calhoun, who also held the office of justice of the peace at his death and was married to him here in 1871.

She leaves two brothers, Josiah Gilbert of Los Angeles, Cal., and Dwight Gilbert of Irvington, Neb., and two sons, Charles Sampson, by her first husband and Burt Stilts, by her second husband, both of Cody, Wyoming, who came with the body.

Among others present were Dwight Gilbert and wife of Irvington; Mrs. Lytle of Craig; Mrs. Purvis of Omaha and Mrs. Len Gilbert of Blair. Mrs. Henry Roberts presided at the organ and two of the Vaughan sisters sang the anthem. The pallbearers were Charles Clark, William Frahm, Hans Schwager, James Vaughan and John Trisler of Ft. Calhoun and Marion Trisler of College View. The Omaha minister having failed to arrive, Elder Woods officiated at the grave.

Mrs. Stilts was born at Bangor, N. Y., Feb. 23, 1840 and was among those noble pioneer women who helped to build up this great state during her twenty-five years residence here. She was well known for her kindness and good will to all, was for several years superintendent of our Sunday School and one of the charter members who labored so hard toward the building of the old Congregational church and often was kind to this writer’s family during our early struggles here. W.H. WOODS
